Netflix’s Tales of the City is filled with stories like these. ![]() The episode is poignant for many reasons, but will be remembered for the way it tells the underappreciated story of the infamous Compton’s Cafeteria Riot - one of the earliest instances of queer activism in the U.S., which preceded the Stonewall Riots by several years. ![]() ![]() The series’ high point is a special flashback episode that follows a young Anna Madrigal (brilliantly played by Emmy-nominated actress and Her Story creator Jen Richards), as she first arrives in San Francisco in the mid-60s and finds her tribe in a group of other transgender women, including the no-nonsense Ysela (Daniela Vega, of the Oscar-winning film A Fantastic Woman). ![]()
